Book Club: April 2016

Hello Loves!

With the semester coming to an end, I had a really hard time getting around to my books. I tried really hard to do as much as possible, but it was a real struggle. By the end of the semester it's rough to get as much done as you want. Luckily the semester is over the first week of May and I'll be back on track! I'm really excited to get some more reading done. I was able to start this one, but I wasn't able to finish it.

Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte
I really liked starting this one. It was a difficult start, but I'm excited to finish this book. I'm a little confused as to how it's going, but I have high hopes to how it goes.

What books are you reading?

Studying for Finals

Hello Loves!

Its that time of the year...... FINALS!!! It is always a very stressful time! I know a lot of people stay up really late studying and sometimes forget to eat. While it is very important to study and remain active, get good sleep, and eat healthily, it is finals time which means that studying is in the forefront of everyone's minds. After 8 years of finals, I think I finally got a hang of studying...... Well a little bit anyway. I'm by no means an expert.

one// Pomodoro Method
Basically it is a time management method. It is done in six stages. You start with deciding what task you need to get done, then you set the timer (usually 25 minutes). Work on the task until the time goes off, if something distracts you then write it down and move on. Once the timer goes off you put a checkmark on a piece of paper if you have less than 4 marks take a 3-5 minute break then reset the timer and begin again. If you have more than 4 marks then take a 15-30 minute break, reset your checkmark count then start over. Keep this up until you finish all your work!

two// Notecards
Note cards are incredibly useful tools. Some times I find that they are over used or we spend too much time making them and not enough time studying them. This is why I like using the online version. They are much quicker to use and you can some times find them premade for you. If studying with flashcards is the way to go for you, then start studying early!!

three// Practice tests
A great way to study is to use old tests. If your professor gives you old tests, work on them!! If your friends have their old tests use them to your advantage. The other thing I would say is do the questions at the back of the chapters, professors usually base questions off these. Do as many practice questions as possible. Don't try to guess what will be on the test, just practice and study them best you can.

four// Outlines
Just like flashcards these are double edge swords. Outlines are great study tools, but they can take too long to write. If they are not done during the reading process of the chapter they can actually be really useless. Don't spend your precious time on making outlines if you are short on time. Ultimately making an outline is up to you, just think about it carefully or start really early.

five// Relaxing Music
Studying in absolute silence does not work for me, somehow I get more distracted than with some noise. I like having some low instrumental music while I study. It is the best way for me to concentrate. I usually like putting on pandora and getting on the Enya station. I don't usually read while listening to music, but in all other instances its great to relax me and get into a studying mood.

Hello Loves,

So lately there has been a new makeup trend called Baking. It is a really cool technique. I saw it online and I have definitely used it many times since then.

This is the first video I saw about baking your make up! I honestly thought it was a joke, but turns out it was a real technique. It is really great because of the way it makes your skin look and your make up looks really smooth. I personally like how it turns out in pictures.

How to do it:

one// apply LIQUID concealer to the areas you normally put it.
two// apply translucent powder or baby powder on the concealer, do not blend it in. Leave a thick coat on.
three// allow the powder to set for approximately 10 minutes
four// using a different, clean brush wipe off the excess powder

It was suggested in the video to do your other make up while you wait for your face to bake. That is, of course, totally up to you! I personally love the way it looks!

Let me know what you think

With finals right around the corner, many people usually end up skipping meals and just snacking-- or drinking too much coffee. I think it is difficult to schedule in meals during finals, even though it is super important!! 6 Ways to Style Shoulder Length Hair

Hello Loves!

Not so long ago, I cut my hair so that it qualified to be considered a "long bob" or LOB or shoulder length hair. While I love cutting and experimenting with my hair I find myself at a complete and total loss when it comes to doing my hair when its short. Mind you I could complain for hours about my hair and hairstyles, I just have trouble spicing up my routine with short hair. I found myself just leaving my hair down or throwing it in a weird, pointy ponytail and in a horrible rut.

one// Soft Waves
The quickest and easiest way to change up your hair is by adding some soft messy waves. Using a curling wand and if your hair is like mine, a lot of hairspray makes the perfect texture for your bob.

The best thing about the soft waves is that they can quickly transition to another hairstyle like a half-part up or twist backs.

two// Half Up Braid
This one is super great! I love pulling my hair back into braids. The trick into making it look professional is to hide your braids.

three// Half-up Twist
If braiding isn't your forte there's always twisting. Hide your bobby pins by putting it in the crevices of your twists so they don't show up. Don't open up your bobby pins that way they are stronger.

four// Roll & Twist Updo
Like the twist and braids this one is all about the bobby pin placement. Basically you want to twist your hair then create a bun at the nape of your neck.

five// Braided Updo
I love this one for going out of a formal event. It works out great with my hair because it splits up the massive amounts of hair I have into smaller pieces. You want to bring all your hair back, separate it into three pieces and braid each of those. Then you want to pin up each braid until you like how it looks.

six// Lace Braid Updo
This one looks super complicated but it's actually way easy! You separate your hair into two and lace braid each half. Then you pin up each braid. Keep in mind where you position your bobby pins!

How else do you wear your hair?

Relay For Life

Hello Loves,

Last week we had Relay For Life on campus. I was lucky enough to be a part of a team that relayed the entire time. My campus does not allow overnight events so we were able to stay there for several hours. I really enjoy walking around the track.

The entire track is lined with Luminarias that each represent a loved one from our community. I did not make one because it was too difficult for me to dedicate one. I admire the strength of the survivors that were honored and even walked along the track. It is always an amazing event. If you ever get the chance to participate please do. Its just one day for us but a lifetime for the cancer survivors.

Here's to a world with more birthdays!
Who do you relay for?

Dancing the Night Away

Hello Loves,

The last week has been a lot of fun! We had senior ball and then Formal. My Little was my date for the Senior Ball and one of my best friends was my date for Formal. It was such a fun time, but my feet still hurt. I danced for so many hours in the some really high heels. Sometimes I'm still in awe of how people can use heels all day, every day.

My fam and I took some really cute pictures at the photo booth. It was so fun! Sadly they didn't have the chocolate fountain that was promised, but they did have pizza. On the upside Senior ball had a S'mores bar which was my favorite place of the night. I'm usually pretty bad at eating at parties because I get too caught up with dancing and hanging out with my friends.

This is one of my best friends from high school that also happens to go to college with me!

I hope you dance!

DIY Sugar Scrubs Recipes

Hello Loves!!

A couple weeks ago, I posted a bunch of sugar scrub recipes that are absolutely wonderful and here are some more. I just can't help myself. These are great presents for your friends or yourself. They are so wonderful for your skin and so easy to make!

one// Peppermint Candy Cane Scrub
This one is perfect for Christmas (yes, I know its too early for this but its also not). Peppermint is also great for the skin. It tightens and rejuvenates the skin.

2 cups sugar
1/4 to 1/3 cup almond oil
Peppermint essential oils

Once it is all mixed together to a consistency you like you can divide it into two batches to make the different colors. The pink can be done with pink food coloring or some drops of raspberry juice. You can then add the colors in alternating bands for a cute gift.

two// Brown Sugar & Vanilla Scrub
I like these brown sugar scrubs. The consistency of them is a little different due to the sugar. It is a lot less harsh than white sugar scrubs.

1 1/2 cup white sugar
1 1/2 cup brown sugar
2-3 tbsp coarse sea salt
1/2 cup olive oil (approximately)
10 tbsp vanilla extract
1 vanilla bean pod (optional)

Mix together the white and brown sugar then add the salt. Add the vanilla bean pod (not necessary for your skin but it smells good). Pour the olive oil into two cups of the mixed sugar. Allow the olive oil to soak through. Mix the ingredients and add the vanilla extract. Spoon into the mason jars and seal tightly.

three// Ginger Sugar Scrub
Ginger is great for sensitive skin, it acts as an anti-inflammatory and decreases the redness.

1/4 cup coconut oil
1 tbsp ginger, coarsely chopped
1/4 cup oil (tea seed, jojoba, sunflower, or almond oil)
3/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup salt
1-4 drops essential oil (lemon)

Heat the coconut oil and ginger pieces for 5-10 minutes until ginger scent and juice has transferred into the oil. Remove from heat and press through fine sieve. Mix the warm coconut oil with other oil. Stir to combine & cool to room temp. Add sugar and salt. Scent with essential oil and pack. Makes approximately 8 ounces.

four// Honey & Sugar Foot Scrub
Honey is great as a healing agent. This is a great foot scrub and helps your feet get soft and ready for your flip flop weather!

1/4 cup brown sugar
2 tbsp coconut oil
2 tbsp honey
2 drops peppermint essential oil

Combine all of the ingredients, stir to fully combine. Does not have to be refrigerated. Massage into feet and enjoy!

Which are your favorites?

Before Posting (anything!) Ask Yourself.....

Hello Loves!

Technology has come such a long way. I remember freaking out when accidentally opening internet on my little brick like phone and now I'm constantly on the internet on my "smart phone." It is amazing how far we've come in such a short period of time. But with all this quick and easy access comes some steep consequences. We have all become increasingly comfortable with sharing things instantly.

But when you think about it.... are we really safe? Are we putting our best foot forward? Do we realize that once its out there, it is out there forever? These are some huge consequences to our fast paced, instant sharing lifestyle. We all have voices and we all want to be heard. I think that is the greatest part about this social media, we can all give our opinions, create ourselves, and network with the whole world. It is truly amazing. But this also got me thinking..... what should we be thinking about before we post online?

Here's some important things I consider:

Does sharing my location put me at risk in anyway?
Usually I try to avoid sharing my location, my school, and any other large identifying factors. I've found it increasingly difficult, so instead I try to delay my posting so that I may still not be in that area once it is out there. This is incredibly easy with Instagram or blog posts, but it gets difficult with Snapchat. I'd advise when you want to post on Snapchat turn on airplane mode and the post won't go live until you "click to retry". It has been great for me. Remember, personal safety always comes first and there can be some weird people out there!

Do I care if this is offends someone?
I enjoy hearing different people's opinions. As a matter of fact, I'm pretty hard to offend. I know some people are a lot more easily offended than I am. At some point it is impossible to not offend someone. But there is a difference in having an opinion and putting remarks out there that will negatively impact you. This is the primary reason why I stay away from highly controversial topics, it never ends well. Remember there may opposition to what you say, so mentally prepare for that.

Am I posting for the right reasons?
This one is hard to decipher for me. I want to say that I always post for the right reasons, but it is not always so easy. Sometimes we post with a specific audience in mind (subtweeting), we all know when this happens. As sly as you think you are it is always obvious, so maybe next time reconsider.

How would this post affect my future?
I was always told, "if you can't show this to an adult or person you really admire, then don't post it." This is pretty much my rule of thumb. As you are building your personal brand it is important to stay consistent with who you are as a person. You don't want future employers, colleges, friends, or family members to see something that does not represent who you truly are. You can be genuine and real while still considering the implications of your posts.

What do you think about before posting?

This past weekend was initiation for my sorority. Which means now my lovely gglittles are all officially sisters! It was a beautiful ceremony and I had a great time at my last initiation. This month is also the beginning of the end for us as seniors. We have already started a bunch of senior activities. We had Commencement Ball and Senior Walk coming up we have Senior day, Senior picnic, Senior Send off, and a Carnival. Happy birthday!! I hope you get lots of cake!
