Book Club: May 2016

Hello my fellow clubbers!!

I hope you all had a great Memorial Day weekend. Sadly, this month the only book I finished was one I needed for school. Since I was unable to finish or even start a new book I don't really have my monthly recommendation. I do try to read books every month and I will work on that for next month, I need to look up the different books that I want to read and then keep a list. Some of my friends have great GoodReads accounts, there are many different lists on different websites, so I wanted to come up with a fun list of Girl Boss books for May. Some of these I have read and the others are on my list.

one// Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg
I read the graduate version of Lean In. Sheryl Sandberg is the definition of a Girl Boss. This is a re-read and I never re-read. You will love it too!

two// #GirlBoss by Sophia Amoruso
My little sister read this one and absolutely loved it! She takes a fun route in how to make her dream- Nasty Girl- a reality. It literally took my sister a couple of hours to read. Definitely on the must read list.

Why Men Love Bitches, Sherry Argov
three// Why Men Love Bitches: A Woman's Guide to Holding Her Own in a Relationship by Sherry Agrov
This book as been on my list for quite some time. This book is not Sherry telling us to be Bs to our significant others or to treat them badly. Instead she is giving advice on different things that may occur and how to implement techniques that will help you be more confident. Much of the advice she gives can actually be used in the workforce. So don't shy away. Go check it out.

I Am Malala, Malala Yousafzai, Nobel Peace Prize
four// I am Malala by Malala Yousafzai
I LOVE THIS BOOK!!!! I cannot say any more good things about it. Malala is an inspiration. What you learn from her is that as long as you believe in something and you keep working toward it every single day you will achieve what you want to achieve. It doesn't take a lot of people or a lot of money it just takes a person that cares a whole lot.

Nice Girls Don't Get the Corner Office, Nice Girls Still Don't Get the Corner Office, Lois P. Frankel
five// Nice Girls Don't Get the Corner Office: Unconscious Mistakes Women Make That Sabotage Their Careers by Lois P. Frankel
Now Lois is not giving us a free pass to be a brat. Instead she is pointing out the little things women do in the office to be "nice" and how those things can actually be career pitfalls. Its time to own up to what we do and make a splash in our careers!

Secrets of Six-Figure Women, Barbara Stanny
six// Secrets of  Six-Figure Women: Surprising Strategies to Up Your Earnings and Change Your Life by Barbara Stanny
Honestly I'm in it for the name of the book! This book gives you the advice and tips you need to become that rising start in your corporation or work as a freelance blogger. We need to learn from our successful counterparts and take their advice to the future!

Malcolm Gladwell, The Tipping Point
seven// The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell
My mom first read this book from a friend's recommendation. I had no interest in reading it until I had to read a different Malcolm Gladwell book for class freshman year. Now I am a convert! His books are great and packed with great advice and information. He explains the art of little things making a big impact. It's all in the details.

Kate White, Cosmopolitan, I Shouldn't Be Telling You This
eight// I Shouldn't Be Telling You This by Kate White
Kate White was the Editor-in-Chief of Cosmo. And just like the book promises it is full of gutsy secrets and tips every women needs for her career! I really loved reading this book and would recommend it. She has many other books (non-fictions) to further satiate your need to read her advice!

What are you reading?

Memorial Day

Hello Loves,

Happy Memorial Day!

While today is a great day because we all get an extra day off work or school, it is also important to take a moment and think about what today really means.

Today is about honoring the men and women who have bravely protected our freedom. Some of these men and women made the ultimate sacrifice and died while protecting us. Look at going to your local VA and dropping off cards or donating supplies or money. Attend a parade to honor our armed forces. Stop by a military cemetery and leave a flag or wreath at a soldier's grave. Let them and their families know that each soldier is not forgotten and is greatly appreciated.

Ways To Start Your Morning on The Right Foot

Hello Loves!

I am a morning person. I know it seems like a rare thing for college students to say, but I like morning. I like having things to do. I like how productive it makes me feel. I just like having the whole morning to myself. I don't like scrambling out of bed to run to class in the mornings. Now that classes are over, I get to enjoy my mornings and really get into my groove. Lately, I've been trying not to sleep in and keep setting my alarm even if I don't have anything to do. Although I haven't been doing a good job about it this past week. It is not always easy to abide by that alarm, but I've gathered some really useful tricks for me.

one// avoid hitting snooze
The best way I found to train myself for this is to use the sleepytime alarm to set your alarm in the morning then to only set one alarm. By only setting one alarm you force yourself to get up at that one alarm and you wake up less tired. Its those little snooze sleeps that make you more tired.

two// let some light in
Letting light into your room will not only nicer to wake up with light, but you will help naturally wake up your body. I personally can sleep in a light room, but the extra light of open curtains really helps me get up in the morning and adjust to mornings.

three// make your bed
I am a huge advocate of this!! I love doing this because it makes your room look nice and tidy. I also really like getting into a made bed in the morning.

four// wash your face
Washing your face in the morning not only helps you wake up, but also makes you feel refreshed. Whether it's just a splash of water or exfoliate this always helps me get my day going.

five// get moving
Morning workouts are really great ways to go. It's hard to get the motivation to get out of bed and get moving, but it really does help getting you awake and going. Some mornings when I have stuff to do, I usually do some stretching or go for a walk. It really is great if you can squeeze it in.

six// check your plans
I hate waking up late and feeling rushed. I, also, hate forgetting something important I have planned and feeling frazzled. Because of this I like to look over my calendar for the next day and writing down my Daily 3. By looking at my planner the night before, it is ready to go in the morning and I already know what's coming.

seven// listen to upbeat music
I'm not a huge music fan (I know, insert disbelief here). But some morning really need a kick start with a little upbeat dance party. Think of those songs that great you happy and moving along. Really dance around and enjoy your little dance party.

What kinds of tricks do you use?

Jet Setting Accessories

Hello Loves,

Summer is always a great time because its travel season! Many people are lucky enough to travel to many different places and with travel comes so really fun accessories. Slowly, I am trying to work on my travel accessories instead of just throwing everything in a duffel bag and calling it a day. I love packing, even when I put it off to the last minute. There is something really fun and motivating about the chic and fun accessories that make packing even more fun!

I really wish I could just snap my fingers and just get some of the cute accessories. I know its not possible, but slowly I will be working on getting my accessories. It takes some time and some inspiration but we will find all our supplies.

Realistic Ways To Simplify Your Life

Hello Loves!!

Some weeks are just too insane. You know the feeling, when you have too much to do. Too many messages to respond to, too many things calling your attention. You know that feeling when you are just paralyzed by the sheer amount of stuff? I am, also, in need to slow down and simplify my life.

At any given time you probably have comments on Instagram, emails that are waiting, a voicemail, a text, coursework that needs to get down, the blog post that needs to be written, and your desk that should be cleaned off by now. I know. As I sit here writing this I can nod my head in agreement.

Sometime we just need to slow down, trim the excess, de-prioritize the things that don't actually matter, and simplify. Here are some tricks:

one// List every single thing out ever.
Sometimes, when you are overwhelmed, it's not because everything needs to be done right away, it's just that your mind is constantly reviewing and remembering all the things you need to get done. This is where a list or calendar come into play. Sit down and write every single thing you've been needing or meaning to do. Even the smallest little thing. Write it all down so you can get it off your mind. Then post it somewhere visible. Breathe.

two// Go on a deleting rampage
When there's too much crap everywhere, it starts to take up space, like unread emails from months ago and apps that you don't use..... Delete, delete, delete!! Go ahead and unfollow and delete friends while you're at it. Your devices and online life deserve simplicity as well.

three// Declutter
This is probably my favorite part of simplifying!! Creating clean physical spaces will do more for you than you can possibly imagine. I know that when things are overwhelming to me, cleaning out my desk and closet can make a world of difference. I'm talking about that never used bottle of lotion, the bottle of vitamins you don't take, and the papers all over the place. Get rid of it all! Only keep what matters

four//Make a daily 3
I am slowly working on this one. Every night write down the three things that MUST get done the next day in order to feel like you've made progress and feel on top of things. That is the list to go by each day. Something is always happening. You need to learn to step away anyway. Your daily 3 will give you permission to shut down the work when you need to and it will let you focus on where you need to be.

five// Decide
Saying yes to all the phone calls, commitments, coffee dates, and catch up sessions can drain you from very needed "me time". Especially if you're in the midst of a hectic month. For periods of time that you're super overwhelmed you'll have to create boundaries on who you're spending time with. To make that filter easier, make a list of people that you want to spend your precious time with. Whenever you get an invite, assess whether the person is on your priority list. If not, delay until you're feeling more in the zone and relaxed. Just let them know that you are very busy but reschedule to a better time.

When you get overwhelmed with how much you have going on, you've got to get out of your head and into action. It's the only thing that helps the anxiety.

Grad Gifts

Hello Loves,

With graduation already happening and around the corner for some other people, graduation presents become a must. I remember when I graduated from high school some of my friends and I exchanged gifts. Now that I graduated from college, my family got me a new necklace and are holding off on anything else depending on what I end up doing after graduation.

I know it can be really difficult to buy graduation presents, especially if you are graduating as well. It can be a little expensive, so I want to get some options that are not very expensive but are very useful. I think useful or practical gifts are best way to go!

Happy Graduation!

Say You'll Remember Me......

Hello Loves,

Today marks a week of graduating college. It is really crazy to think that I have gotten this far in school and in life. I really can't believe that day came. It feels like its one of those moments that you look forward to for your whole life and so in the moment it just doesn't even feel real. Even a week later it doesn't feel as if I have graduated. I suspect that it will finally hit me when everyone goes back to school and I do not.

So what will I be doing?
As of now I will continue working within the Red Cross. It really is what I love doing. I have worked out of being an intern and now I will be a Volunteer Partner. From here I will be looking for jobs within the realm of non-profits and humanitarian aid. I am really excited for the future. I have been enjoying the work I have been doing so far. After a couple years of working, I would like to get my masters in public health. This is really my goal for now. Wish me luck!!

Graduation Cap Hairstyles

Hello Loves,

Last week when I was trying to come up with a way to style my hair for graduation, I had the hardest time coming up with ideas. The Internet was shockingly lacking on graduation cap hairstyle ideas. So I decided to come up with my own! These are especially important for grad pictures!!

I ended up going with the half part back, which is really my go to on most days. I think it worked really well for me because I got to pull my hair out of my face. First things first you want to do frizz control, remember that the cap comes off a couple of times and you don't want frizz hair or ends. To that degree dry shampoo is also great for creating some volume.

one// Flip your hair
One simple trick if you're wearing your hair down natural you can part it to one side then when you take off your cap you can flip it to a different part. By doing this flipping you are hiding the hat hair that occurs under the cap. Changing your part is the easiest way to change your hairstyle!

two// Curls
If you have very curly hair, you might want to straighten it out a bit. Get a blowout, give it a bigger curl or wave. Flat hair at the top and too many little curls at the bottom will look a little strange.
If you have straight hair, curl it a little or give it some wave. Any weird hat dents are easier to hide in waves than on completely straight air. Go for a looser curl, tighter at the bottom and looser toward the top. Curl the front away from your face.

French Braided Bangs | CGH Lifestyle

three// Bangs
Bangs always end up looking weird with hats. So I would suggest braiding them back or putting them in a twist so that your bangs don't look like they are glued to your forehead. You can do a lace headband or even bring your hair to the side into a sweeping side braid.

Happy Graduation!

Mother's Day

Hello Loves,

Yesterday was Mother's Day. I hope you all were able to celebrate with the mother in you life! My sisters and I were able to spend the day with our mom. We started off going to church then we had a quick breakfast. My mom actually does not like breakfast so we went to dinner.

My little sister and I cooked for my mom. I made ciabatta and my little sister made chocolate mousse. We had salmon for dinner with a very nice salad. As a present we always try to get our mom something that she needs but is refusing to get herself! So this year we actually fixed her cracked cellphone screen! My mom really needed it!

We had a very relaxing and quiet Mother's Day. That's exactly what my mom wanted to do. Its hard to plan things because my mom just likes quiet days in. My dad tried to help us plan something, but ultimately we decided to stay in and relax together as a family.

Happy Mother's Day
